Just because you're "stuck" in the city doesn't mean you shouldn't be aware of these things.
I am a survival gardener. Yes, I am lucky enough to live away from the city and have my own land where I can garden and practice other survival skills, but I do have plenty of friends and family who live "in town" and I always encourage them to explore different survival skills adapted to city living.
For example, to those of you who want to grow your own foods but are limited when it comes to space, hydroponic growing is a great way to grow! In fact, many city dwellers have come up with some ingenious ideas of how to grow with very limited space. Here are some topics I encourage you all to do some research on:
? The Windowfarms Project
? Hydroponic Survival Gardening
? Gutter Gardening
? Rooftop Gardening
? Community Gardening
In addition, may city dwellers have patios or balconies they can container garden on, and even that can get creative! Space is always an issue, and many patio gardeners have come up with some great solutions. Hanging planters and plant stands are a great way to use all the space available to you when it comes to growing food on a patio or balcony.
So, you see, where there is a will, there is a way. Don't fall for the excuse, "Well, I don't have any space to garden", because if you really want to, you'll find a way. Survival gardening isn't just for those of us who live in rural areas. Anyone can do it; you just need to have the determination and the creativity to make it happen. And as they say, every journey begins with a step, so I encourage anyone interested in learning how to grow their own foods to just take that first step already! You'd be surprised how rewarding it can be!
Getting out into the garden is increasingly popular once more, many people find that it helps them to relax and there is a sense of satisfaction as you see your plants grow and your garden develop into something special. In this series of articles I will introduce new gardeners to the art of gardening. It is not something that can be learnt overnight, but that is part of the appeal. There is always something new to learn, no matter how old, young or experienced you are!
We must aim to provide the plants with water, light, heat and nutrients in the right quantities and at the right time for the plants to thrive. Not only that but we must aim to go one better than nature and to fine tune the greenhouse system to the point where it produces the maximum output for the minimum possible input.
The money we spend on lighting, heating and watering our greenhouse, feeding the plants and treating them for pests and diseases are the inputs. Our own time is another input and one that is often in short supply. Few of us can spend as much time as we would like in the greenhouse.
Outputs are the fruit, vegetables and flowers we harvest from our greenhouse. Somewhat less quantifiable are the physical and psychological benefits we derive from working in the greenhouse. Growing plants is a recognized way to combat stress and depression.
