In protecting marine resources in terms of waste disposal and segregation, there are measures that are regulated and scrutinized by international protocols and standards and the activities of such ships. However, because implementation of such protocols and standards vary from one area of jurisdiction to another, there are lapses and overlaps.

In particular, cruise ships represent a minute portion of the entire shipping industry. However, the nature of the cruise ships carrying people around, entertaining them while they are aboard the ship, make them a large scale threat to nature. Cruise ships can carry a vast number of crew and passengers that an equally large volume of wastes including human refuse are produced. Aside from the hazardous and toxic wastes, cruise ships also emit air pollutants. Such wastes, can totally eradicate aquatic life if not treated and disposed properly. Moreover , as cruise ships visit the same ports repeatedly and concentrate on a certain route, the cumulative effects result to a large significance.

How are human wastes treated? Vessels, both commercial and recreational are required by laws to be installed with toilets with marine sanitation devices which are mainly designed to prevent the discharge of untreated sewage. For the treatment, disinfection and sludge formation, treatment system generally are provided, and are effective in removing pathogens that cause water borne diseases, oils, greases, suspended solids and particulate metals that deprive living marine life of oxygen. Depending on the designated distance from the shore and differs from one state to another, after treatment, such wastes can be emptied into the ocean because some states completely prohibit the release of any form of treated wastes into their area of jurisdiction.

How and where do cruise ships dispose hazardous wastes? Because of certain protocols, as specific distances offshore for the discharge of specific wastes apply, cruise ships cant just empty their tanks ot waste treatment facilities' outlets and release toxic wastes whenever and wherever they want. Certain laws also prohibit the discharge of bilge water, hazardous wastes, solid wastes, grease and oil into the waters. In accordance with existing laws, furthermore, proper storage of such wastes also applies until they are offloaded for disposal. Furthermore, in accordance to every state's protocol, laws mandate that oil separator must be available.

They are normally equipped with amenities similar to the amenities found in luxury hotels but differ in the way of waste and garbage disposal. To sustainable bodies of water necessary for living, it is important that all of the equipments are running smoothly as the efficiency of each tool is important since cruise ships move from one port to another.
