Are you looking to drop a few pounds? Have some difficult belly jelly that just won't go ? Tired of racking up miles upon dull miles on the tread mill at the Local Gym with not a lot to show for it? Tired of raw knees, aching joints and too many pointless hours of cardio and yet not looking toned and ripped? Well read on because HIIT might be just the ticket you need to break through that plateau in a fraction of the time you've been spending on so-called traditional "cardio" training routines.
Interval training (likewise called HIIT - High Intensity Interval Training) is a very popular cardio workout routine right now. ??It's very much the polar opposite of LSD - Long Slow Distance. Interval training is short and super intense - like sprinting would be. ??LSD, on the other hand, is much longer and done slower like jogging might be. Scientific studies have shown that interval training is much more effective than LSD. ??It gives you many of the exact same advantages that LSD does, in only a little amount of time. ??And it offers you many other advantages that LSD doesn't.
Essentially, LSD is simply aerobic training, meaning that it's an activity that the body makes energy to perform with oxygen. ??Or in other words, you're not breathing that hard. ??Interval training, on the other hand, is anaerobic training, meaning it's an activity that the body produces energy to perform without oxygen. ??Or again in other words, you are breathing hard. LSD training increases your aerobic abilities. ?? ??Interval training, however, increases anaerobic capabilities (which again, makes sense) and aerobic capabilities. ??You're in fact getting 2 for the price of one. Interval training has also shown very helpful at dropping fat, as at the finish of a training session, your metabolism stays "jacked up" for quite a number of hours after. Nevertheless there is a major issue with interval training though - it has to be extremely, super arduous. ??If you're not putting in the proper intensity into this cardio exercise plan, then you're going to get less than average results. This is because volume and intensity are reciprocally relative in cardio training plans. ??You could go long and slow, or brisk and grueling. ??But you can't go long and hard. ??Nobody ever sprinted a marathon... However say you do your interval training at a low intensity. ??Now you're slow and short which is the worst of both worlds. So, how can you make sure that you're not wasting your time, and still profit from the benefits of interval training? Simple - just choose some intense activities, and perform them at an average volume. ??This may include playing a number of sports, or better yet, heavy circuit-style weight training. It is still a version of interval training, which will be briefer shots of highly intense activity. ??Still, for the cardio activity won't be at 100% intensity, you just perform with a little more volume to compensate for it.
