Everyone loves puppies until they get rowdy and start breaking things inside the home. If left unchecked, they can grow up into rowdy and uncontrollable pets that you would resent having. It is thus important to train your pup so that you can keep them and yourself happy later on.
Your puppy will make a few mistakes, but hopefully these are minor, and large-scale damage is limited. It is not easy to train a puppy, but it can be done. Here is some advice on how to get this done.
First, prepare yourself by keeping in mind that this requires much patience and love. Puppies are young and require a lot of time to understand new things. Think of your puppy as your baby - they are pets so treat them with love.
Bear in mind that puppies cannot hold their wee-wee for very long - one hour per month of age. This translates to a two-month old pup needing to urinate every two hours. Do not try to make them hold out and control their bladders, they cannot and this is unsafe.
Your new best friend will learn more quickly if you set a routine, so that he will eat, go to the bathroom, and play at a set time every day. Remember that dogs are intelligent creatures. Because they learn when chowtime is, dogs think of each feeding as a reward for their conduct throughout the day.
Three, be kind to your puppy and make him feel that you care by frequently taking him outside, about every two hours or so and after he wakes up in the morning. Whenever you can, take the puppy out for walks after they have eaten and had a drink. While you are outside, let him find a bathroom spot so that he learns not to use your floors.
Lead your puppy to his potty spot by using a leash. Reinforce the action by saying "time to potty" or something to that effect as he is doing it. Make your puppy feel good by taking increasingly longer walks when he does the potty process correctly.
Do not allow your puppy to go to the bathroom inside otherwise he will never stop. Avoid this problem by supervising your puppy when he is inside. When your puppy does his deed outside on the chosen spot, reward him with petting, praise or a treat.
Some younger puppies need to be fed as much as four times a day. Keep to the feeding schedule as strictly as you can. In general, it works best to make the potty and feeding times work together.
Finally, don't feel bad if you have to put him on a leash before you feel you have housetrained him enough. Housebreaking a puppy could take some time. Your puppy will not be trained overnight, so be ready to start the whole process over and over again until he understands.
