Dental Implant is the technique of replacing a tooth with an artificial one, the root of these tooth are usually made of titanium while the crown are made from a variety of different materials, such as, metals, porcelain fuse-metal, all resin, all ceramic or all porcelain. Once an implant is completed, it resembles an original tooth. These implants are place within the bone and are an excellent substitute for the original tooth, only a slight difference has been noted while chewing and this is as a result of the absent of the periodontal ligament.
Various steps are involved in a successful implant, these include through examination, planning and analysis before any surgical procedure begins.
The initial stage comprise of a detail examination of the patient's month, the bone structure and the soft tissues, an x-tray would be done and maybe even a bone scan may be done to identify any possible complications.
If the tooth that is being implanted is a replacement of an incisors or canine which are visible when the patient smile a detail analysis of the patient smile will be required to determine if any bone or soft tissue grafting is needed.
For a basic procedure, the implant is set into the jaw bone with the use of a hand osteotomes or precision drill, this type of implant which is most commonly used takes approximately three to six months to anchor and heal, upon healing a crow restoration is placed.
As for a more detailed procedure a stent may be used to facilitate the placement of the implants. This is a mole with pre drill holes that shows the position and angles of where the implants are to be placed. Once the precise area is identify a small pilot is drilled into the jawbone, this hold is gradually expanded to allow placement of the implant screw. Once in place, a protective cover screw is placed on top to allow the area to heal. Following the healing process, the dentist will remove the screw cover and attached the abutment, which holds the crown or artificial tooth in place. A temporary crown is then placed around which the gum grows and shapes itself in a natural way and the final step is completed when the temporary crown is removed and a permanent one is placed.
Once an implant is properly taken care of and maintained an implant restoration can remain in place for more than forty years.
