If you wish to have a colourful garden during the spring, then the fall is a good time to start planting your bulbs. Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocuses are just a few of the plants that you can plant during the fall ready for spring. To ensure that you are provided with a bright garden in spring, you may wish to consider planting your bulbs in October, November or early December, when there is less likely to be frost.

To ensure that your bulbs grow successfully, you will need to select ones that are of good quality. Only buy bulbs that are firm and avoid any that are damaged or soft, as these are less likely to grow properly. Ensure that you buy your bulbs from a trusted source and once you have obtained them, begin planting them as soon as possible.

Your bulbs will need to be planted in a suitable location with the right soil conditions. Some bulbs may require plenty of sunlight and some may be able to tolerate cold temperatures during the winter, so think carefully about the requirements of your bulbs before you plant them. Daffodils for example require plenty of sunlight whilst tulips are more likely to grow in cooler temperatures.

Fall is a suitable time to plant bulbs as the lower temperatures mean less risk of plant disease and less problems with pests. Therefore it is vital that you avoid planting your bulbs too early. Wait until summer is over and then begin planting them. If you are planning to plant tulip bulbs, then aim to do so before winter. Although tulip bulbs prefer colder weather, they will still need time to settle before the temperatures drop too low.

Bulbs are easy to grow and only require a little of your time and care. With the right amount of sunlight and well-drained soil, your bulbs will be provided with what they need in order to thrive. If you are planning to grow them in pots, then choose a suitable container and fill it with general-purpose compost. Bulbs in pots can be grown indoors or for maximum protection, you can consider using a set of cold frames.

Adding a greenhouse to your garden will provide you with more freedom when growing a selection of bulbs, as the growing season can be extended. You can keep your bulbs protected from the frost and easily add extra heating or lighting to meet their requirements.
