Night on the Hunter tells the story of Harry Powell, a murderous con man who thinks he is performing the lords bidding by ridding girls of their sinful desires. Harry spends the bulk of the story wooing a widow, Willa, to find out in which her late husband hid ten thousand bucks ahead of died. Willa does not know but her two young children, John and Pearl, know, and are trying to keep the secret from Harry. Night of your Hunter is really a noirish, nightmare told from a child's perspective, as well as the complete narrative is told employing opposing forces, Enjoy and hate, little ones and adults, and great and evil. Laughton along with Director of Photography, Stanley Cortez, use their possibilities in lighting to juxtapose the excellent and evil forces inside a child's nightmare in which adults, are either evil, or enable the youngsters to become harmed.
The films subject matter deals with stark contrasts, as pointed out above, most specifically, fantastic and evil, and the mise-en-scen mimics this. John, Pearl and Mrs. Cooper are seen as innocent and very good, and are portrayed that way, in softer, much more naturally hunting light, although Powell, who is witnessed as evil is often observed in harsh, or reduced critical lighting or as a silhouette or shadow.
The 1st scene in between John, Pearl, and Powell takes place at night, when John is in bed with Pearl telling her a story. The interior of the bedroom is lit with low-key lighting coming by the bedroom window placing shadows on the area. John stands in the light shining by as if it were a spotlight, when Powell walks in front from the light source casting an ominous shadow into the room as he does in to the children's lives. This silhouette coupled with the foreboding score clearly defines the kids as good and Powell as evil though he's a supposed man of god.
Mrs. Cooper is definitely the only adult inside the film who is purely excellent, who will not facilitate in some way the children's torture by Powell. When Laughton introduces Mrs. Cooper the camera tilts upward from her footwear to her face. She is shown in much more all-natural crucial lighting to offer the audience a favorable impression of her. The audience is supposed to notice, as would be the little ones that this woman is on their side. For the duration of Mrs. Coopers' final confrontation with Powell, the exterior of the property is shot in low-key lighting with Powell yet again shown only as a silhouette. A cut to the within of your house shows John is lit with 3 point lighting within a setting having a pitched roof reminiscent with the murder scene with Willa. This emphasizes the religious themes in the movie as well as the contrast of superior and evil. Although Powell thinks himself a man of god, it is actually the kids that are the pure at heart and are portrayed in favorable light, whilst Powell lurks in shadows the complete film.
As Powell sings a religious hymn outdoors Mrs. Cooper is within staying up. She is at first witnessed in profile as a silhouette but the close up of her shows her in softer, three point lighting whilst Powell continues to sing becoming lit by harsh light creating only his face barely visible. It can be this scene that is perhaps the very best instance of your contrast of fantastic and evil. Although Powell within the shadows sings his song insincerely, Mrs. Cooper, who is films only example of adult goodness sings the alto a part of the hymn with all the deepest candor.
