Creative Colors

From the name Yellow to Banana-appeal…now just how did you do it? Green to Olivetta…what? Purple to Grape Jelly…now I’m really confused!
Every day we come across millions of colors and color combinations. With each basic color in the rainbow comes a different hue, brightness, lightness, saturation and a multitude of other factors that affect a color’s visual outlook. Today we have so many different color variations that the simple red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and indigo just isn’t enough. How can we distinguish between a deep red and a coral-red? That’s where a little bit of creativity, a little bit of imagination and a whole lot of inspiration comes in to play!
When naming a different version of red or green or blue for the color palettes of our medical scrubs and uniforms we have to start somewhere. Creativity is a great combination of imagination and inspiration from things we see in our lives every day. And at Uniform Advantage, we take that daily inspiration and channel it into naming the colors for our uniforms each season. Here are some of the steps we take to get our creative juices flowing in order to help us in naming our nursing scrubs:
1. Get inspiration from what the color reminds you of.
o What type of food does this color remind me of?
o What type of object is often in this color?
o Where have I seen this color before?
o When I first see the color, what is the first thing that comes to my head?
2. Flip through magazines.
o Ransack the pages of your favorite fashion magazine for great color naming inspiration! Some fashion tops or cute dresses have creative names themselves that can give you some naming inspiration.
o Check out clothing catalogs…some great names leap from those pages as well.
3. Stop by your nearest beauty store or peruse the web and check out all the nail polish color names out there.
o Nail polish colors often come up with the most creative names when labeling a color. “Linkin Park After Dark” for a dark, black-ish purple?—classic!
So with each season comes a new color palette to put our naming creativity into action for our medical scrubs and uniforms. We’ve had nursing scrubs with a range of fabulous names including Banan-appeal (Yellow), Shadow (Light Grey), Grape Jelly (dark purple), and more! It’s a fun process to come up with new color names and we hope our tips above can be useful in your creative color-naming process!
