Notting Hill is one of those famous, recognisable place names, known by those who have never even visited London. It’s partly due to the synonymous film which is set in this W11 area of the city; it starred English actor Hugh Grant and also Julia Roberts, who is an international movie star. The film attracted a lot of tourists to the area, but that’s not the only thing that keeps Notting Hill taxis in business. There are plenty of gems to be found in this part of West London.
Portobello Market is a hit with both local residents and visitors. You can go there any day except for Sunday (when it’s closed); during the week there are market stalls selling delicious fresh fruit and vegetables, amongst other edible treats; if you’re looking for some cool clothes and vintage goods, go along on Friday or Saturday. Of course, Saturday is also the day for the popular antiques market, so that’s definitely worth a look. Take a Notthing Hill taxi there to make a day of it, strolling along Portobello Road and browsing the delights on offer.
An event that attracts thousands of revellers to the area each year is Notting Hill Carnival. Beaten only by the one in Rio, it’s the world’s second largest street festival, so definitely worth a visit! With Caribbean themes running throughout, expect to hear music floats playing reggae, calypso, hip hop, pop and drum and bass; there are colourful, sequined, feather-adorned dancers, food and craft stalls lining the streets. Bear in mind that you won’t be able to get too close in a Notting Hill taxi, because there are road closures to accommodate the carnival. It takes place over the August bank holiday weekend. Although there are plenty of police and security on duty, it can become quite rowdy with such big crowds; if you’re planning to take small children to the festivities, head along on Sunday, as it’s the designated family day.
As well as being home to these notable features, Notting Hill is simply a lovely area to see. It’s affluent and cosmopolitan - one of the places to see and be seen in. Many young professionals are drawn by its appeal, despite the high property prices. You’ll see that there is pretty Victorian architecture with terraces of large townhouses, small boutiques, designer stores, wine bars, cafes and restaurants. It’s easy to get to in a W11 taxi too, so there’s no excuse not to visit this fashionable corner of London.
